Inkygoodness take over Pictoplasma

Bristol-Birmingham based art collective Inkygoodness are thrilled to announce they have been selected to present a new exhibition as part of this year’s Pictoplasma Character Design Conference in Berlin.
Co-founded in 2008 by illustrators Lisa Hassell and Michelle Turton, Inkygoodness aim to showcase emerging talent across the UK, and have evolved to include creative talent from as far afield as Guatemala and USA. The ever-evolving collective of illustrators, artists and image-makers have experienced a meteoric rise since their debut show just two years ago, presenting group shows in Bristol, Birmingham & London.
Inkygoodness presents 'Character Totem' will be their most ambitious project to date, showcasing the talents of 35 international artists & illustrators, with a walk-through installation of hand-painted, and inked wooden totem poles at the coveted Neurotian Gallery.
As long standing visitors to Pictoplasma, this highly celebrated event has been on the wish list of places they hoped one day to be participating at themselves. The duo, first visited Pictoplasma two years before their first show as Inkygoodness and are incredibly proud to have made the transition from visitor to exhibitor in such a short time.

Selected artists have creaated their artworks ahead of the event at selected venues across the UK.
The selected artists we're required to attend ONE of four 'Live Draw' UK events to create their Totem artwork. These took place in Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester & London, throughout Feb & March.
Each event and the subsequent Berlin trip will be documented on a dedicated 'Character Totem' website, launching at the end of January. This will include photos, interviews, press coverage & mini-films of the events.

MA Children's Book Illustration

Hi all. Steve Rack here. I've not really been online lately, and it's fair to say that my work is going through a bit of a transitional period at the mo, so I haven't been uploading much new work in recent months. The recent change in my illustrative approach is 100% down to the MA in Children's Book Illustration that I am currently studying for at Cambridge.

Strangely, I have found it totally liberating working outside of my comfort zone and as a result I seem to be discovering a new, more real approach to illustrating that somehow feels more honest to me. It's still early days as far as my course is concerned, but I thought I would share with you some of my recent sketchbook illustrations that are part of the first module: Observation and Experimentation. In this module we have to draw, draw, and draw all things that we observe that relate to our chosen theme. My theme is 'Home'.

This whole creative process has also really helped me cope with watching my dad battle through cancer over the past nine weeks in hospital. Words can't even begin to express just what a journey it has been.

HOHOHO Get a Grip

The spiffing Sam and Kay from Get a Grip asked four illustrators including little old me to create an A6 crimbo card for the first Get a Grip Christmas card pack, all Printed on 100% recycled paper stock using water based inks. They will come with 4 upcycled envelopes by d!rektrecycling made from maps.

You can pre-order the cards HERE for £5 including postage within the UK. Alternatively, you can wait until they are printed, and buy them directly from the studio at The Custard Factory (Birmingham) in a few weeks time (provided they haven’t already sold out).

The pack also includes work by Darren John (top left), Lee Nutland(bottom left), and Thomas Lacey(bottom right)
There will only be a limited number of cards printed, and will be available and posted out as soon as they are printed in the first week of December (if not sooner).

Boys Who Draw at UPFEST 2010

Some of BOYS WHO DRAW got together at UPFEST 2010... Mister Millerchip, Steve Rack and Neil Keating (with Dave Bain curating the whole space and Andy Council doing a collab. piece outside). Other collectives drawing all afternoon were: Girls Who Draw, Inkygoodness, Decked, Urban Illustrators, Hot Soup and Drawn Recordings. Rumpus Films were there doing Live animation and Bristol Drawing Club hosted a huge public drawing floor. Markmaker and Lumen played the tunes.

A warm weekend!

Well its been a warm one this weekend and so I popped down to Falmouth for a couple of days to catch some rays and see what was going down.

With just a few days left until degree deadlines the summer shows are nearly ready, I got a sneak peak at some bits and pieces and it promises to be a good one!

Ammo Magazine Issue 2

I am a keen collector of art magazines, and Ammo Magazine is right up there in my top five published art magazines, along with Giant Robot, Juxtapoz, Dangerous Ink and Hi-Fructose.

Ammo Magazine is fresh, and it offers a glimpse into today’s world of contemporary illustration, art and design. It really is a feast for the eyes.

The much anticipated issue 2 of Ammo Magazine is now out and available to buy, and it is jam packed with 64 pages of pure eye candy.

Nick Deakin’s cover illustration did make me smile (very bottom pic), and it is his brightly coloured, vibrant and fun art that sets the bold colour theme for this issue.

Interviews with Julian Callos, Chelsie Sixsmith, Gemma Correll and Inkygoodness feature, along with a sweet collection of art by a variety of artists, including Squink!, Dave Bain (picture below), Uberkraaft, Mr Kone, Linzie Hunter and Dean Zappy, to name but a few. There is also an illustration in there by me, based on my (Steve Rack) Toe Fluff characters. It’s great to be in such good company.

I was particularly pleased to see that that the super-talented artists, and founders of art collective Inkygoodness, Lisa Hassell and Michelle Turton, have a prominent feature within these pages.

All of the art featured here is so distinct, imaginative and inspiring, but if I could pick out one piece of art from the pages of Ammo Issue 2 to stick on my wall, it would have to be Squink!’s boldly tragic, yet strangely enchanting masterpiece on page 39. (picture at the top of this post)

This came to my attention today, it's a very sad piece of news related to the disaster in Haiti.

A friend, Sarah Larnach (who you'll know as the cover artist for the Ladyhawke album) has had mega troubles with her family who where working in the area.

"My sister Emily lives and works for the U.N. in Haiti with her family (husband and 3 children), and they have been devastated by the earthquake which struck on January 13th. As of right now, January 14th, only two members of the family are accounted for."

In order to try and help Sarah is auctioning off original artwork to raise funds for the relief effort.

"This is the first time any of the artwork related to the Ladyhawke self-titled album, or its singles, has been put up for sale. I had been waiting for the right moment, and this must be it. This painting, and cd's are being sold to raise funds for relief in Haiti."

What a day. What crazy snowy weather we are having! I managed to retrieve my car today from a pretty awkward spot down the road. The joys of living on a steep incline.

Well, today has been a good day. My new Satio phone arrived today. I was going to go for the iPhone, but I just can't get over how bad the photos come out! Sorry, iPhone, you need to get with the times! People have been using good quality camera video phones for years. I think it's time you upped your game. I was tempted to hold out for the new Google phone, that was until I discovered it has a slide out key pad (that's so 2002). I am pretty snap happy and low resolution photos do my head in, so I think my new 12 mega pixel Satio will suit me just fine - look out for non art random pics on my Flickr - until the novelty wears off that is.

Speaking of pictures, I have just been having a browse through all the amazing characters at my ILikeCharacters.com daily blog (which by the way is now open for submissions). I rarely actually sit down and properly take it all in. I have to say that there are some super talented character artists featured there!

I just thought I'd share with you that daily character blogging has commenced at ILikeCharacters.com after a short holiday break. For those that don't know, ILikeCharacters.com is a website that I set up last year all about characters from around the world, including regular character submissions and interviews with fellow artists that enjoy drawing characters. Jon Burgerman - Interview 2/2

Last week I was in the fortunate position to be able to interview a couple of very successful and well known individuals working in the creative industry today, Rex Crowle and Jon Burgerman. The lads are no strangers to hard work and dedication which is why we'd like to say a very big thank you to them for giving up some time for these interviews and preparing a special doodle each (found above).

Our next guest requires little in the way of an introduction as over recent years he's become the poster child for contemporary illustration, I'm talking of course of Mr Jon Burgerman.

What was the very last thing you doodled on?

This isn't going to be very interesting but it was my sketchbook. Shock. Horror!

Do you have a favorite drawing instrument and canvas?

Black felt pen and white paper.

Which was the first project you worked on where you thought to yourself... 'living the dream'?

Maybe when I was working on a level for WipEout Pure on the PSP or I guess on any of the paid for flights I've been lucky enough to be put on (not first class though, unfortunately).

Several of the boys are from Nottingham and wonder if you'd like to get a pint next time your around?

Erm.. ok. Just email me and if I have time let's drink ale and eat salty bar snacks.

Do you find that becoming so well known for a particular style restricts you in terms of personal creative development?

hmm not really. I'm in control of what I do next and where I take my work. I might ponder what people might make of it but hopefully I never let that restrict me. I'm sure people would prefer to be a little surprised now and then too.

Are you involved in any exciting collaborations or projects at the moment?

Yes, I'm working with the brooklyn based artist Jim Avignon on a musical project - Anxieteam and a live performance doodle dance projection thing to accompany it.

What was it like on Blue Peter, do people recognise you in the street?

It was fun and surreal on Blue Peter. The studio lights make you very hot and clammy. I don't get recognised in the street but I have been recognised on a train once and at the airport recently. It was strange, flattering and bizarre. Often people I actually know don't recognise me, or decide not to. hmm.

Plagiarism is always a hot topic especially amongst illustrators. What do you think about people that copy your style, is it quite positive to know your inspiring or do you get seriously miffed?

Of course I'm super happy to inspire people but am a little disappointed when 'grown ups' ruthlessly copy my work. I know it's flattering but I'd like to think people who like my work are smart and nice enough not to blatantly rip me off. When big companies do it I do get seriously miffed. It kind of feels like you've just been burgled.

Any words of wisdom for other other illustrators hoping to make a splash?

The best way to make a splash is, I think, with nice, good, work.
And then just hope people take notice and stuff. There's no magic formula - it's a mix of luck, talent, luck, knowing people, work and luck. Overall though, if you're enjoying what you're doing, regardless of making a splash or not, then you're winning. It's better to like your time working than not.

Rex Crowle - Interview 1/2

What was the last thing you animated?

Aside from reanimating myself out of bed this morning, it was a little hairy caveman savage catching fish. Savagely.

Greatest nickname you've ever given to a character?

Hmm well I quite like Shiny ManCannon. Although I haven't had time to fully develop Jeff Baps so far.

What was it like to be involved in a project as successful as LittleBigPlanet (ps3)?

Lots of fun. I've worked on video games for quite a long time, but this one felt the most like we were playing at making a game, rather than working, due to the talent of everyone involved, great support from Sony, and it being a exact distillation of the teams collective imagination. And if the creators have a smile on their faces while they make something then that should transfer to the other side of process when little Jimmy unwraps his Christmas present (assuming his parents gave him LittleBigPlanet, and not Chunky McMeatSpray 2 or something else). Plus also its been amazing seeing the influence of the game turning up all over the place, from a Flickr full of photos of people knitting their own Sackboys to the building of the various LBP pop-up shops, and teaming up with Marvel, Capcom, Konami, 2000AD etc to make new downloadable LBP things.

Are there any exciting new projects or collaborations on the horizon?

Yep, quite a lot of fun things coming along - although the most exciting thing for me is a bit of holiday in NYC after the busiest year ever.

Favourite computer game of all time?

Thats very hard to answer. Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the best, and probably also my favourite, although it has some strong competition for my affection from the quirkier end of the spectrum. Titles like Psychonauts, Parappa, Day Of The Tentacle and Parodius.

Do you consider yourself to be a certain type of creative i.e. illustrator, animator or is the real fun in blurring the lines?

Basically I like making stuff, in whatever medium that best suits the idea, which is a bit harder to put a job description on, and probably makes it harder getting jobs. But a lot more fun.

What's it like paying the bills through your passion?

I've definately been lucky along the way, but its also hard work, mainly because there are so many avenues to explore, so that can easily mean trying to do too much.

Have you ever been in a collective and what are your thoughts on collectives?

I've been in some web-based collectives, with some awesomely talented folk like Julie West http://www.juliewest.com/ and Alex Fuentes http://www.losfokos.com/ but I've been slacking on that front lately. I need to get back to doing some collaborations for fun again! They are definitely a good way to grow as an artist, and the web makes it much easier to set them up, but I think it's probably best if you can still all sit around in the same studio and throw paint at each other than having to rely on remembering to log in and post something.

Any pearls of wisdom for those hoping to get a head in this industry?

There'll always be people that can draw better than you, so don't get caught up on it, just carry on enjoying it for your own pleasure and your work will shine stronger.

I saw this collection and immediately fell in love. This is the work of Doktor A and the Mechtorians.

Raised by the military and monitored by men in white coats until he was 16. Doktor A has always scribbled monsters. "You will never make a living drawing little men" said a teacher once. They were nearly right. He has to draw, design and build little men to make a living.

These dubious skills have seen him work in theatre, Tv, advertising, magazines, toy design, merchandising and the music industry. He lives under a hill in the UK. From there he monitors the world's off-kilter-culture and produces his dark twisted dreams. Character driven clashes of urban pop culture, classic children's stories and neo-Victorian industrial neverlands.

Asterix and Obelix is probably one of my favorite illustrated series, and the plucky duo are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year.

The Adventures of Asterix (French: Astérix or Astérix le Gaulois) is a series of French comic books written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo. The series follows the exploits of a village of ancient Gauls as they resist Roman occupation. They do so by means of a magic potion, brewed by their druid, which gives the recipient superhuman strength.

This is a fantastic series I stumbled upon a while back, now onto it's second volume it's well worth a look!

SKY PIRATES OF NEO TERRA is the tale of a fantasy world once devastated by global catastrophe. Through the tradition of Glidewing racing, order is preserved amongst the remaining tribes with an annual Great Race, where the winner of five consecutive glidewing races selects a leader for the Great Tribal Council. The Pirate King has won four victories leaving him poised to undo the order the tribes of Neo Terra have worked to preserve. It's no big secret that my imagination revolves around the ability to create weird and wonderful things. From industrious flying machines to ferocious monsters of the deep, they all help to make up a world where things are never quite what they seem at first glance.

I'm in the midst of building a new and exciting site that will house my brand new you illustrated novel. The book titled Vetuu 'Chasing the Sun' will consist of a fortnightly strip that aims to tell the story behind the world of mylaststar and is set for release January 1st 2010.

In preparation for this event I want to let you in on a little sub-genre that has the biggest impact on my work.

Steampunk is a sub-genre of fantasy and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date.

The New English: Tectonic Plates

The New English: Tectonic Plates project is based on a small selection of briefs to create some Illustrated plates for a exhibition and book run by Paul Bishop from a company called The New English.
The brief I chose was "Hello" the art of introduction.
The image is based on a real life brief incounter between a drummer who was on a lunch break and a random dog that stormed in to the the rehearsal room who mounted his leg and started to beg for a bit of his cheese and meatball Subway. Rich the drummers first word suprisingly wasn’t “what the fu….” But it was simply "Hello....".

Its quite funny how some briefs you work on for ages coming up with a Good Idea and other times the ideas find you, so a big thanks to Rich and Tinkerbell for their help on this one.

I think some of the other Boys Who Draw have sent in some Submissions, so watch this space.

A Squire of great visual Goodness Called David Hughes who is know widely for his vector illustration and handmade zine Koodoo has been a very busy Boy creating a beautiful indie Mag called AMMO.

1.some people in this world might not know who you are and what you do, could you enlighten them please?

My name is Simon Mills I also use the name boredmonkeylove.I am a self confessed doodle addict, you can find my doodles on tshirts, wallslive at Mr Wolfs in Bristol on found objects basically any surface ink, paint andmarkers will stick to. I am also a dab hand with a jigsaw and like to make cutoutdoodles from found wood.

2.when creating a your characters what is your process?

Doodle, doodle, doodle cup of tea and some more doodling. All my characters startlife as part of a mega doodle. I then choose the scribbles that can become monsters,or bearded men, grab a few cloud doodles add a few arms, an illustration or cut outis born.

3.How did you get in laying down lines?

I have been a scribbler and skateboarder since I can remember which feeds the creative process.A boring job a few years ago led me to doodle on every spare bit of paper and old envelope I could get my hands on. I did a degree in Furniture designso the cut outs started back in college. The power of boredom is strong. Embrace it and use itfor creative gain.

4.is there any process or techinques that you would like to experiment with to push your styles boundries or just for plain fun?

I really want to take the wooden cut outs to a much larger scale, and use the jigsaw like you would a pen, maybe create a whole world For characters to inhabit. I have a plan for this in the not so far future.

5.if you could draw on something or someone any where in the world, who/what would it be and why?

A bearded man doodle with a penis (image included) on the Brooklyn bridge, my favourite bridge.I have just been looking out of the window at a crane, it would also be cool to paint giraffe necks on them that would look so cool between the dull buildings of Brizzle.

6.if you where being attacked by a bear and you only had a pen to protect yourself what would you do?

Poke him in the eye with the pen and doodle a road out of there.

7.is there anyone you would like to throw a some Borat style high 5' at?

For those of you who dont know as well as dooderling im also one of the founders of Lielow and Sketch, a lil co-operative that puts on visual events from exhibitions to live drawing nights based in ipswich.

Kicking off October with a bark is the wonderful world of Animal House!

We are absolutely ecstatic to be able to bring to ipswich a collection of some of the most amazing artists and Illustrators producing work today.

All pieces in the show are based on and Animals real, fantastical and fictional, come visit the zoo and check it out

INTERVIEW: The 5683‏

1.Some people in this world might not know who you are and what you do, could you enlighten them please?

I'm a London based mixed media 2d artist that illustratively puts the fun back in the frankfurter, takes a bunch of puns from the punnet of bananas, in a kind of bedknobs and boobsticks kind of way. I paint with brushes and adore 0.5mm clicky pencils and fineliners. All these things transpire into character based images on paper, canvas, wood and objects.

2.When creating a your characters and other visual delights, where do you get you inspiration from?

Inspirationally there was one strip in The Beano in the early nineties called Calamity James and the story-lines were twisted and the attention to quirky details was abstractly finite for something so simple. These things put it one notch above the other childish tripe that filled those pages. But that was yonks ago and if we get all realistic and psychological its probably all to do with creating a visual treat for myself that shows the beginnings of a far more interesting story-line that's far removed from my insanely inane life that exists outside the corners of the canvas or paper I'm working on. Thus the inspiration is the escapism of it all. I also like fancy dress and talking crap; both these things inadvertently help. Another motivation is the mystery of what drives a human to draw, paint or stencil the same picture for months and months on end. That's something that should be avoided at all costs.

3.How did you get in laying down lines?

My magnificent father was a mover and shaker in the stationary industry. His stationary business was his first and most important child. Because of this, at home there was an abundance of paper and various products to make marks on said paper. I couldn't escape the f**king stuff and now I start clucking if I'm not near a ream of paper or a stick encased mixture of graphite with clay in different degrees of hardness. Tony Hart helped too. 4.Is there any process or techniques that you would like to experiment with to push your styles boundaries or just for plain fun?

Ive had this Dremel engraving gun for a few years now, and used it for the first time on a skateboard the other day. It worked a real treat and I,m keen to do some larger more intricate pieces with it asap. I need to get a few more fine nibs for it but I don't know where to get wood from that isn't some low grade laminate cack and haven't entirely got the time or patience to go wood shopping.

5. Tell me and the fine readers of this blog about Biteproof (A TRULY AMAZING ZINE) and what else have you in store for bite proof?

Biteproof is the answer to the question "why do i keep on seeing the same old bloody images in every other magazine, website, blog or gallery?". Biteproof presents a collection of brand new works specifically made for the mag by internationally recognised artists who for the most part have their feet planted in character based work. Each time, the content consists of pieces that illustrate a set of words that is the issue title. Issue 2 which is coming out soon is called "Cybernetics, Dianetics, and a hypodermic of Mutant genetics". It has aspirations to be a quarterly mag, and issue 3 is to be called "American lies, American highs, and an indigenous dose of Red Indian highs".
The mag challenges the artist to do more than donate 'any old image' and I like to think that they enjoy that and that there is an intrigue as to what take on the title fellow contributors would have made. Its a great way to see how these artists interpret words and how they chose to narrate them. Its also not open to general submission so I can guarantee what I can consider to be the cream of the crop in their game. I want it to keep on looking more professional by the issue whilst staying clear of adverts and unnecessary space wasting text. Its all about the art. The public have been conned by the repetitive banality of streetart and i hope this is a showcase for actual skill and ingenious aesthetic design. Biteproof is for the real connoisseurs of the genres it encompasses.

I'd definitely like to say a big thank you to all the past, present and future contributors of Biteproof. Without you its nothing. Obviously. And extra special 5683 goes out to Jenism, who is easily one of the best female drawers out there right now. She's one to watch. Other men said they have seen angels, but I have seen Jenism, and that art enough. Oh yeah and "Ban the stencil, Long live the Pencil!"

Unfortunately I couldn’t make the opening of the wonderland exhibition, but luckily some of the Boys Who Draw was on hand to show off there skills and spread a little visual joy on the presiding as well as sending me a little feedback on this AWESOME EXHIBITION.
These first two pic’s are of the lovely ladies that founded Inkygoodness back in 2008.As well as being VERY good Illustrators Lisa Hassell and Michelle Turton work their little socks off to put on these super smashing great shows, so if you see them in the street or a fancy tea room go give them a big hug as they thoroughly deserve them.

the first bit of goss is that some of the Boys Who Draw will be showing there skills at the InkyGoodness wonderland exhibition this month in my home town and at one of my old haunts Birminghams amazing custard factory, in my opinion the best venue for live music, art and vintage shopping in the world.....well the West Midlands anyway.

Starting from today, the most exciting 'DECKED' exhibition opens at 'Stolenspace Gallery' on Brick Lane, London. As well as myself and others from the marvelous BOYS WHO DRAW collective, the show features established talent from around the UK. One such creative chappy is MIKE O'SHEA who has submitted a rather amusing board for display (you'll have to go and see the exhibition, if you want to see it, as he's been very secretive - although I had a sneaky peek and his image did give me the willies!) Here's our quick-fire interview with the man himself:
1) What got you into drawing?
I was a wee baby when I started drawing. I didn’t know what I was doing back then.
I’d say my older brother was the one I looked up to as a child. I used to copy his draws a lot, but they never looked as good as his. He still inspires me to keep drawing.
2) How would you describe your artwork?
I hate this bit! I’d say humour plays a big part in it. I like to draw things that I find funny. Life can be very serious if your not careful.

3) What are your influences?
Skateboarding is a big part of my life and everything that goes along with it.
Artists that I’m stoked on are Stefan Marx, Ed Templeton and my friend Paul AKA Arserott. His stuff is so flipping good.
There are loads more people that influence me, but I have brain freeze.

4) What's been your favourite event/exhibition which you've been part of?
Couldn't say yet.
5) You skate quite a bit and have been painting images on decks for a while now. What are you doing with that work?
Well I’ve done a board for the ‘DECKED’ exhibition which you (Bain) are also part of. By the way your boards are rad. (*ed. note: I didn’t put Mike up to this.)

I want to do an exhibition in Bristol with like 40 of my hand painted boards. Perhaps, cover a room with them: a big fat feast for the eyes. Watch this space!
6) Where on earth do you get your rude ideas from?
From my stupid brain: bad, bad brain!! I don’t know, it’s just what I find funny tends to be a bit rude sometimes.

7) How do you get yourself off your arse in the morning and into Mr Artiste mode?
It’s not hard really, you’ve just got to get up and go. I like being up early in the morning and seeing all the suits going to work motivates me to not be one of them.

8) How are you going to take over the world / Any big plans in the pipeline?
Well, I’ll have some work in the new INKYGOODNESS exhibition in Birmingham in the beginning of September. I also want to have that show in Bristol, which I mentioned earlier.

I have a few big ideas but nothing concrete enough to say just yet. Check back with me in a couple months.
9) Have you a snappy piece of advice for budding artist types?
Yeah, if your not having fun, do something else. If you are having fun, then keep doing it. Also, do it for yourself and no one else.

Oh yeah, and chicks dig guys who draw. ;)
10) What's your favourite cheese?
Stilton or mature cheddar, yumm smelly breathe.

Decked Project ~ Exhibition

Anyone following this blog over the last month or so will be aware that some of our very own members and their esteemed illustrating friends are taking part in the marvelous 'DECKED' exhibition happening in 'STOLENSPACE GALLERY' on Brick Lane in London. Our second exclusive interview this month is with the wildly creative genius that is KEV MUNDAY. Barely had Mr Miller left the hot-seat, when we should be graced by the marker pen wielding don of the UK. Known for his unique, toothy monster characters, that enjoyable sense of colour and not forgetting his sheer, incredible output of quality artwork, we were very excited to nab Kev for a bit of a chat about how it all happens. And he even whipped out the infamous pen and did us a nifty drawing too...

1) How did it all begin?
I started drawing and painting with my friends when I was a teenager. We would paint walls and put stickers and stencils up. I did my first work on canvas when I was 18.

2) Do you have a favourite character that you like to come back to/redraw?
I like drawing new characters, but this guy was one of the first that I started doing (see above image). His name is gumball and he's appeared on hundreds of stickers and paste ups over the years.

3) What are your influences, artistically or otherwise?
Energy, colour, DIY ethic, punk, traveling, skate culture, old wood cuts, aboriginal art, unity, countryside, collaboration, bold, crowds, riots, upbeat, flow, graffiti, nature.
Artistically: Keith Haring, Basquiat, Andy Howell, David Choe, Jeff Soto, Roger Hargreaves, Jon Burgerman, David Shrigley etc etc. I love creating work with kids, they have better ideas that adults.

4) What's been your favourite event/exhibition which you've been part of?
Event wise I like creating big collaboration pieces with loads of other artists, this piece (see above image) we (me, DBO, Faunagraphic, Rocket01, Famous When Dead, Deus, 2 Pence, SU1) painted for Let Them Create Gallery in Stoke On Trent was great fun. My favourite exhibition is probably the Urban Art Sale at Selfridges just because of the huge number of people who saw it.

5) Is there anything that you've not done yet, with your artwork, that you would love to do?
I would love to make some animations. I've started playing around in flash, hopefully one day I'll make a whole series of short movies.

6) How do you know when a piece is complete?
When it looks like it does in my head, or when I run out of space

7) How do you motivate yourself?
I don't find it hard to motivate myself, I really enjoy what I do so it's pretty easy.

8) Tell us a bit about 'Under The Hat' and 'Visual Tourettes'? What were some of the challenges that you had when setting up these projects?
Under The Hat is my clothing brand. I started it when I was 17, I had 2 designs printed on 10 t-shirts each and sold them to my mates and on Internet forums. The stuff is now for sale in stores across the UK and Europe and I've got a guy who distributes it for me in Scandinavia. the biggest challenge with selling t-shirts is that pretty much everyone creative is doing it.

Visual Tourettes I describe as 'an open mic night for the art world'. I started organising nights in 2007, the basic set up is that we take over a venue for a night and the walls of the place are open to anyone who wants to display and sell their artwork. We have live painting from loads of different artists with the focus being on collaboration. The nights have taken place in 14 cities across the UK.
I organise other projects for Visual Tourettes too, a couple that are currently running are the sketchbook and board art shows.
The sketchbook is a travelling collaboration between 50 artists from across the world. The book is sent to artists one at a time, who are asked to start half a piece on a page, plus finish half a piece by an artist on the previous page and then send it on to the next artist on the list.

The board art show is being run in conjunction with FBBB. It's a collection of custom hand painted skate decks/ snowboards from 20 artists. The boards are travelling around with the FBBB crew to all the snowdomes across the UK and we've got a final exhibition of them all at the Reebok Lounge in Shoreditch later in the year.

9) Have you a snappy piece of advice for budding artist types?
Spend a long time developing your own style and use it to tell your own story.

10) What's your favourite biscuit?
I'm going with the humble bourbon.

Tip-top illustrator, character designer and general all round good guy, Aaron Miller dropped into the BOYS WHO DRAW virtual lounge for a little chat about what he's up to these days. Recently graduating from Falmouth, this boy has been making waves in the design world with his clever, dare we say cute and lovable characters. We got out the notepad and jotted down his answers to our tough questions, while he whipped up an exclusive image, just for us. Keep an eye on this chap...

1) What made you want to do illustration?
I’ve always been passionate about drawing and creating art since an early age, whether making clay pottery once a week with a local artist or drawing cartoons of my family. It wasn’t till my early teens that I realised the commercial power of illustration, well commercial power isn’t exactly what I thought, it was more about seeing new and exciting characters infiltrating adverts and products I liked and I wanted to become part of it.

2) How do you come up with a new character design?
I always carry a sketchbook with me, and am constantly drawing new ideas and adding faces to everyday objects. I usually just draw and the character develops out of a series of black biro doodles. So draw, draw, draw, drink a pint of orange squash, draw some more.

3) What are your influences, artistically or otherwise?
Like many artists I am inspired by the world I live in, especially my pet chinchillas, I find that when I’m struggling to find new ideas, to sit with them while they are playing and just draw. I usually manage a few new drawings without having my pen chewed or sketchbook pages attacked! Also my mum’s mum, used to draw and paint, and it wasn’t until after she died and I was given her sketchbooks that I realised she used to draw little cartoon strips of a dog and it just drove me to develop as an artist.

4) What's been your favourite event/exhibition which you've been part of or seen?
Since graduating I have only been able to be part of exhibitions setup through uni, so D&AD New Blood and New Designers. I would love to be part of some exhibitions and I’m in talks with a few really interesting creatives about getting my work out there more. So if you are reading this and have a spare space in your exhibition, hello! Please can I exhibit at your gallery?

I also have a secret love of the abstract expressionist’s, artists such like Francis Bacon and Franz Kline, so seeing their work in person at the Tate and in the Moma was incredible. My love for abstract art grew at school mainly after an amazing art teacher pushed me and believed in me. It makes me want to get away from the computer, set up an easel and get all messy with oil paints again.

5) Is there anything that you've not done yet, with your artwork that you would love to do?
There are so many projects that I would love to do. Projects such as clothing, vinyl toys, wall vinyl’s, stationary, shop front’s and window displays, basically anything and everything that I can apply my characters to!

6) How do you know when a piece is complete?
This is a tricky one, in the old days before I used a computer, I used to think, I’ll just add another bit in here, then boom, game over. Ruined drawing. Now I like to work on a project until I see it is complete. Go to bed. Then in the morning look at the artwork again, ask my girlfriend for advice. She is honest and tells it, like it is, and also a great tip I’ve learnt is to flip the work horizontally, to see if the characters still look good.

7) How do you motivate yourself?
I never felt like anyone believed in my work at university, I was too contemporary, they didn’t get my ‘cartoons’, but then I was lucky enough to land a big commission last summer and it made me realise there is a demand for MY work. Since then, I have continued to draw constantly and have an online presence, whether on twitter or through my website. I read recently that if you continue to work hard, the work will come.

8) Tell us a bit about doing the cover for Computer Arts Magazine?
Well, I have worked with Computer Arts magazine a few times in the past, and have always thought, I would love to be on the cover one day. Then one day I got an email from the editor, asking If I would like to be part of the list of 24 super illustrators and character designers included on the gatefold cover of the character design special. Yes please.

I was sent through a rough idea of the scene and I managed to get a great spot, just next to Peskimo’s awesome character, I then sketched some initial ideas, sketched some more and then brought Edwin (the character) to life. Most artists involved are true inspirations to me, so I’m so privileged to be on the same cover as them.

9) Have you a snappy piece of advice for budding artist types?
Yeah, I suppose I do. Right, firstly check your emails constantly, and if possible use an email programme, such as Mail on the Mac, and leave it open so it constantly refreshes and checks for email. There is nothing worst than not checking your emails for a few days to find that perfect email from a lovely creative director.

Secondly, draw. It doesn’t matter how rubbish you think you are at drawing, or what medium you use, (moleskin and a black biro please) as long as your record your ideas. There will always be someone out there who is better at you, maybe it’s because they have been working professionally for ten years or maybe it’s because they are naturally talented. Embrace it, ask to collaborate with them, and don’t be scared to ask questions, however stupid you think you sound.

10) What's your favourite spread?

Tim Lane: 'The Innocents'

He's such a nice chap, that Tim Lane, and he can create a jolly good humdinger of illustrations! Joining me last night for our exploration of Tim Lane's latest showing of work is the lovely illustrator, Amy Timms. Held in the front area of the relatively new Knifesmith Gallery on Christmas Steps in Bristol, Tim's popped up some classic illustrations, plus some new paintings.

Being super-keen fans, or due to some sort of misinformation, the red-head and I were devestatingly early and not at all fashionably late. So it was a bare room, minus the excellent artwork (of course), which we had to our disposal. Very exciting indeed, especially with a well stocked table of beer, wine and bread snacks. Yum - every exhibition should have one! The quiet start gave us a chance to happily snap a few pictures of some of the stand-out pieces.

Tim soon leaped into action and gave us a run-down of some of the pieces in the exhibition. He explained that a majority of the images are drawn directly from his mind-boggling brain, with perhaps some details taken from reference books. "King Tut" is the most directly referenced image, but from a miniscule photo, which Tim has expanded and heaved layer upon layer of detail into.

Going round the room, from this piece, we are almost overwhelmed by Mr Lane's deftly impressive use of the pencil in artworks, "Big Cats", "The Coffin Bearers","Punch", "The Ghost of Christmas Future" and "Descent into Savagery". Practically an exhibition on it's own, the drawings are outstanding and made for a refreshing balance next to the bright and colourful acrylic paintings.

I asked Tim about his use of animal heads and/or masks that several of his characters are wearing. He kept an element of mystery to his reasons for this, but hinted at influences of Greek gods and mythology.

The nine mini canvases are brand new to this show and are wonderful snap-shots of a myriad of eclectic beings, captured in their unique and somewhat bizarre worlds.

This is a show to easily get lost in and come out armed with material for many an odd dream journey. It's also an illustration show of professional excellence and one well worth getting yourself along to. There's a well-stocked rack of prints, all at very affordable prices.

And good ol' Tim did us proud by signing our little banner of love.

"The Innocents?" by Tim Lane

Tim Lane graduated from Falmouth College of Arts in 2004 with a first class (BA Hons) degree in Illustration. Since then he finds himself naturally gravitating toward the fine art market; preferring the greater creative freedom enjoyed in terms of style and subject matter.

The degree- in which Tim concentrated primarily on book illustration- did however help give structure to his love for working directly from his imagination and gives his art its narrative quality. It also encouraged a passion for drawing, which is at the core of all his work.

Tim grew up in Cheltenham but is now based in Bristol where he has exhibited work extensively. He won ‘The People’s Prize’ and ‘The Bristol Arts Consortium Prize’ for the painting ‘The Death Of Childhood’ in Bristol Art Show 07 at Centrespace Gallery.

A huge amount of respect to ANDY COUNCIL for the last month of blog posts. What an entertaining and interesting fellow! No pressure then (!!) as I take over the 'BOYS WHO DRAW' blog for August.

There an awful lot happening this month, so keep checking back here, as I'll be popping up all sorts of mouth-watering illustration gossip, pictures, news and general gumph from the land of BAIN and the wider illustration world.

This time I have gone for a miniature world, a green globe featuring wind turbines, solar panels and electric cars.

Boys Who Draw Dinosaurs

This is my new piece around the theme of 'Boys Who Draw'. It features myself drawing a couple of dinosaurs for my baby boy Felix to play with. The dinos are made up of lettering, pattern, symbols and pencils. The bottom one is based on Styracosaurus and the top one surfing on top of it is a Theropod type beastie. It is carrying baby Felix in his travel seat. Baby Felix is saying 'Hey! Heay!' as thats what he says alot at the moment along with 'E E EE'.

I did the piece using pencil, pen and paints. It's nice to get away from computers.

Funny People

People often ask me whether I do any illustrations that don't feature dinosaurs....well the answer is yes. I do alot of dinosaurs in my work as, of course, I like them and other people seem to like them, so I get asked to do them a fair bit. I do quite a few illustration projects that don't involve dino's or making images up out of lots of smaller things. These are my bread and butter jobs - local council recycling schemes, internal company website thingies. I don't tend to put them up online very often as they are often restricted or I just think that they won't be of that much interest to people.

I thought that a sneak peek at a recent batch of illustrations that aren't what I am usually known for might be a bit of fun. I probably shouldn't be sticking them up here, so SHHHHHHHH!

I got a list of character names and details on where in the world they are travelling to. Some of them are more interesting than others, but then I found it made it more fun to make up little stories about them and what they look like. Mrs Council has been a great help with these funny people...lets meet some of them!

Kev Grey Royal Stock T Shirt

I don't buy clothes and stuff very often but had to get this Ltd Edition Kev Grey Royal Stock Heart T shirt when I was up in Sheffield recently. I bought it from a great little place called The Old Sweet Shop. The shop specializes in selling works by independant artists from the Sheffield area. There was an exhibition of work by Rocket01 up at the time whose spraypaint work is well worth checking out. Unfortunately I didn't get any pics as baby Felix was with me at the time and was getting a bit shouty!

New Poster For Play It By Ear Club

This is my latest poster design for the Play It By Ear club night in London. I decided to go for an ice lolly (based on a Fab) melting in the sun for this one as one of the bands is called Sugar Crisis and is a summer gig. The ants are carrying off bits of the lolly that form the lettering of the poster. I hope it looks like chocolate with hundreds and thousands on it and not poo!

There is a close up pic of one of the ants on my blog if you fancy a gander....it's not that exciting really. More posts soon, but have been feeling a bit lazy since my break away in Steel city so might not be straight away.

Boys Department Studio

Seeing as this is the Boys Who Draw blog, thought it would be fitting to put a few exclusive pics of the studio I share up on it - 'Boys Department'. I don't share it with the Boys Who Draw collective, but with another bunch of old boys who prefer to paint more. The studio is a kind of secret location in Bristol, bit like the Batcave. We like to keep it that way so that we can get on with our business and sit around drinking shitloads of tea undisturbed.

For ‘Urban Myth’ Inkie has selected a cross-section of the UK’s leading street artists: Pure Evil, Zeus, Mysterious Al, Inkie, Steff Plaetz, China Mike, Mudwig, MauMau, Chu, Eco, Andy Council, Sickboy, SHOK-1. Heralding from the infamous Bristol School of Graffiti, Inkie is one of the UK's leading street artists, holding 2nd place title in the World Street Art Championships, and has been identified as Banksy's partner in crime. A dominant presence for over twenty years on the international graffiti scene, Inkie’s trademark intricate imagery is uniquely striking with styles drawn from diverse inspirations, ubiquitous street signage, the architecture of ancient temples, Islamic geometry, and natural psychedelia. Exhibited worldwide, Inkie’s art has been published in the books Banky's Bristol, Children of the Can, Graffiti World and magazines Graphotism and Dazed & Confused, and featured in the 2007 LA graffiti documentary Bomb It, and the British/Brazilian street art documentary Weapon of Choice.

The thirteen artists in ‘Urban Myth’ make their mark wherever possible, creating atmospheric artspaces united by unique visual languages, quirky characters and colorful, dynamic compositions. Graffiti artist Chu creates large-scale works which encourage the viewer to see the world as your studio. Steff Plaetz is one of the original three Scrawl Collective members Plaetz’s instantly recognizable works are among the first generation to pioneer the use of rough sketchbook drawings in finished pieces of art. Pure Evil, street artist and gallery owner, is interested in media-powered communicating with peers through his spectacular works. Andy Council straddles the worlds of street art and illustration, creating distinctive ‘city creatures’ resembling dinosaurs and gargoyles based on architectural features found in Bath and Bristol.

It's an honour to be included in this show along with all these other great artists. Wish I was over there for the opening, I will be visiting sunny Sheffield instead.

Sainty Show at Friend & Co, Bristol

I popped by Bristols smallest galley - Friend & Co the other day and checked out Saintys work. I really like it, it's kind of dark and I like how most of it done in black and white with a few splashes of red. Although Sainty is a boy who draws, he is not part of Boys Who Draw but part of the What? collective.

Saint Pauls Carnival and Bristol Festival

Here in Bristol we like to have lots of parties and get pissed up on Cider, Red Stripe and Rum as soon as the summer kicks in. The best party of all in my opinion is Saint Pauls Carnival. I only went down there for a couple of hours this year and avoided total carnage. It was great to experience all the sights smells and sounds though on an amazing sunny day.

Reminds me also of this piece I painted a while back which is based on the carnival.

Of course, I've never been so out of it that I have seen a Stegosaurus made of speakers there. It would be cool if there was one though, I'm sure it would be very popular. I also got inspiration from old dub album covers such as this shonky King Tubby one..

And more so this Scientist one...

I like all the Scientist covers. They feature all sorts of weird stuff going on, such as him playing football, shooting space invaders etc. Dinosaurs made out of speakers seems to make perfect sense in that way...

Also while out at Carnival I noticed posters up for the forthcoming Bristol Festival which feature a specially commissioned illustration of mine!

The piece is a dino type head made up of all the venues where the festival takes place. More info, bigger pics and sketches over on my blog!

Jaguar Graff project!

On Friday I did a day long Graffiti project with my mate Dan and the kids at Brislington Enterprise College in Bristol. The theme was of their house 'Jaguar'. Here's a pic of the finished piece with a couple of old gits hanging out next to it.

The kids came up with some wild ideas for what to include in the mural, including this, which sadly got rejected as it is a bit...er mental.

Each month the blog is going to get posts from a different member of the Boys Who Draw collective. First up is me! I am going to try and keep it drawing/illustration based. Quite a few things I am doing at the moment have more to do with Graff and painting, so will be covering that too along with some random stuff too no doubt!

Congratulations are in order for several of our members who have been picked by the Inky Goodness Collective to take part in the 2009 gallery event.

In 2008, Inkygoodness hosted their first art exhibition at a small gallery on Gloucester Road in Bristol. This venture inspired a successful group show in the same year: Inkygoodness 2 - Hopes & Fears, showcasing the work of 16 illustrators, artists and designers based in and around the South West.

Our aim is to provide a platform for emerging talent to showcase their work alongside more established artists, offering a unique opportunity to develop their professional careers through self-promotion and networking.

Inkygoodness 3, set to take place in at the Custard Factory in Birmingham this September. This new group show will showcase the very best in illustration, united by the theme of Wonderland.
